Blog post #4- Research Project ENG 121 Richard Flores

The few things that pop up in my head when thinking of a research project and what my topic on the paper will be are two main ideas. My interest and what I already know but want to learn more about. And I also think of what idea will be best for me and for the outcome of my paper.  In general, I could talk about football and everything that involves the sport and what makes the sport as great as it is. But then I start to think of topics I’m interested in like stuff back home like breakfast tacos or H-E-B and everything in between. But with football, I think it is gonna be my best bet as I have options and can get others’ opinions on a topic of football I choose to work on for the project. As with football can talk about the evolution of football from rules, technology, the field, and even how the game can be played to even the change of physical features of the

players. As just in the last 10 years the NFL and other football organizations have revolutionized the game.  As plays, formations, uniforms and even the play style of coaches and players have changed in that little time just imagine the change of the game from now on since the game of football has started. Many people have stepped to play the game of football and helped revolutionize the game and how its played for 90 plus years.

  1. Hi Richard,

Before I get into your football topic, I did want to first talk briefly about how you could talk about breakfast tacos and H-E-B. As someone with a deep love for San Antonio, myself, I've always thought that San Antonio is the best representation of Texas culture, as it places an emphasis on the state's Mexican roots and features a great blend of the different cultures that came together to make the state what it is. For instance, I just did a quick search on Academic Search Ultimate using the search terms "san antonio texas culture" and found a few good articles talking about San Antonio culture--including "The Emergence of a New Form of Mexican Nationalism in San Antonio, Texas", ""Chili Queens" and Checkered Tablecloths" (about public food cultures in San Antonio, referring to fondas), and "Folk culture and urban political economy: The ice houses of San Antonio." If you were to find and use 3-4 scholarly sources, combined with popular sources about San Antonio culture, then you'd be able to form an interpretive argument about how modern San Antonio culture came to be. And yes, even if you are unable to find articles about H-E-B and breakfast tacos, you'd be able to make an argument for how and why those are important aspects of the city's culture today (I'd certainly agree with you--and the Spurs are important too, of course). So if that's near and dear to your heart, go for it. It's definitely the more unique approach.

If you'd rather do football, then that works too. In particular, I'd suggest you focus on the last 10-ish years to analyze HOW and WHY the game has been revolutionized as it has--what factors played a role? Certain coaches/players/offensive & defensive schemes? You could turn to statistical comparisons to show how offense has changed, you could focus on specific teams that played a major role in shifting how the game is played, etc. Your research should still come from a combination of scholarly and popular sources from the library resources (like Academic Search Ultimate), and that should be your first point of focus. Once you've found all you can use there, THEN you can turn to google to fill any holes in your research you still need to cover. Ultimately, this type of argument would be a history-based interpretive argument wherein you argue for HOW and WHY the game has changed as it has in the last decade or so, identifying the key factors you think are most responsible for that change and why.

As I said, either approach will work. Let me know which you want to go with, and I can offer more help at that point. Either way, the goal for the next week or so should be to gather more research than you could possibly use in the paper--if you reach that point, then the paper itself becomes a lot easier to manage.

Let me know how I can help as you keep going. Otherwise, good luck!

    -RC
